What is a creative technologist?

Posted: December 8th, 2010 | Author: | Filed under: Advertising, Code, Random Musings | 15 Comments »

I gave this talk to the agency I work at, as i’m the first ‘creative technologist’ there.

My thoughts on what my job means, where I think the advertising industry is going and some inspirational stuff in the back end.

In a nutshell.

I come up with ‘ideas’ and I make things to demonstrate them.

Comments would be greatly appreciated – This is my point of view – Would love to work with others to understand how they interpret the role (especially across other industries). You can download the keynote from slideshare and see my speaker notes – Some of the slides need this.

Credit to Mark Avnet, Scott Prindle and Richard Schatzberger for helping me frame my thoughts.

Nice post Sermad. Should have put you and Andy up against each other at the talk as Battle of the CT’s.

    Hey sermad,

Nice presentation? How did it go down with the agency folk? I’ve just joined a bigish traditional agency as a CT and I’m having no end of questions on what I do. I’m thinking of getting a t-shirt printed up with some kind of manifest.

      Thanks very much.

Feedback was very good so far but actually showing what I do is working more than telling people.

Yes, my thoughts exactly. It seems that having a Kinect on my desk at work is a great way to stimulate conversation with the creatives :)

Do you find that most of your time is spent generally consulting on digital work, or do you manage to set aside dedicated time for R&D?

I sit with all the creative teams so that helps loads stimulating ideas between us. It’s already got two new projects off the ground by just chatting to people.

I’m about 50% working on briefs as a ‘creative’ – about 25% R&D / innovation and about 25% working with various teams (creatives / planners / etc) to try and add something to what they are doing.

The guys who put me on projects really let me tell them if I have time or it is right (I kind of manage my own time) it is really working well so far.

How do you think ‘creative technologist’ differs from evangelism?

    • http://twitter.com/sermad sermad

Evangelism is a small part of the job but only if you have a hands on understanding about what you are talking about.
