Mingering Mike

Saturday, August 27th, 2005

A few years ago, a couple of record collectors were rummaging around a market looking to grab some records. As they were searching, they started to find hand drawn covers of fake records, all created in felt-tip pen and all made by the mysteriously named ‘Mingering Mike’.

They posted their finds on the record collecting website ‘SoulStrut’ and the response was phenomenal. Bouyed on by this response, they started to track down the real ‘Mingering Mike’…Well in the end they did find the him. Obviously he was reluctant to talk but after a while he warmed to them and then the madness really started to happen. Now Mike has a website, exhibitions and I believe a book compiling his work.

Cool.

ReggaeTony

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2005

I’ve got a spanish friend who wanted some good hip hop mixes - Well your first port of call is to try and sift through all the Reggaeton mixes out there. Most of it…is a bit bleh to be honest as its all a bit to hardcore for my tastes! I was pretty interested when I saw a mix by Tony Touch called ‘ReggaeTony’.

He’s been around for years on the US hip hop circuit and he’s produced some good bits over the years. Anyways, this is a class mix. Its pretty raw but not TOO filthy. The track with the Beatnuts is great.

For those that don’t know, Reggaeton is a mix of hardcore US style hip-hop, danchehall and bashment. I believe it came out of Puerto Rico and pretty much 99% of the mc’ing is in spanish.

TROG

Monday, August 22nd, 2005

TROG is the continuation of radio show that ZELJKO KERLETA started in 1996 under the name of “Cosmic Sounds”. At that time it was broadcast weekly on “YU Radio”. The name was later on reused for the record label that he started in 1999. In 2002 the show changed the name into TROG and became a monthly program as a part of Cosmic Sounds Belgrade Biznizz that was run by Dusan (Coxless Pair) and Dubravka Petrovic on “Beograd 202″ radio station.

One Sunday in a month was taken over by Tom Wieland’s TEE. And finally in June 2005 TROG has moved to B-92 radio station. Now it’s a part of DZUMBUS radio show run by BOYAN MITROVICH (Painkiller Septet) who’s been running it for years. You can (and you should) catch it live: EVERY SUNDAY 21.00 - 23.00 GMT. TROG will be on every first Sunday in a month and the latest edition will be archived and available for listening on demand from this page.

Weekend finds.

Sunday, August 21st, 2005

Nipped to my local spot on saturday and had a good rummage around. Came away with two nice records.

Shel Silverstein - Freakin’ at the freakers ball
Dudu Pukwana & Spear - In the townships

Freakin’ is a pretty bonkers mix of ragtime, country, blues and gospel! Cracking drums on ‘thumbsucker’.

Freaks

The dudu record really blew me away. Really really good afro-jazz. Its not funky but its got loads of swing to it. Would love to know more about these guys.
